About the Book
The book focuses on the scientific breeding management and reproductive improvement of Mithun (Bos frontalis), a unique bovine species predominantly reared in the North-Eastern hill states of India. Mithun plays an important role in the cultural, social and economic lives of tribal communities in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Traditionally, mithun is reared under a free-range forest-based production system with limited scientific intervention in health, nutrition and reproduction. The book highlights the challenges associated with declining mithun populations, forest degradation, indiscriminate slaughter and the loss of genetically superior breeding bulls. It emphasizes the importance of scientific breeding practices and genetic improvement for the conservation and sustainable development of mithun. Special attention is given to the semi-intensive mithun rearing system introduced and popularized by ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun. The book provides detailed information on breeding soundness evaluation of mithun bulls to identify genetically and reproductively superior animals. It explains various techniques and procedures involved in semen collection from mithun bulls. Different methods of semen evaluation are discussed to assess semen quality and reproductive potential. The book covers semen preservation and cryopreservation techniques for the long-term storage and utilization of quality genetic material. Particular emphasis is given to artificial insemination (AI) as an important reproductive biotechnology for improving mithun productivity and genetic potential. It highlights the successful implementation of artificial insemination at institutional farms as well as under field conditions. The book serves as a valuable resource for veterinary professionals, animal scientists, researchers, academicians, livestock farmers and students. It provides practical and scientific knowledge to improve reproductive efficiency, preserve superior germplasm and reduce the risk of inbreeding in mithun populations. Overall, the book aims to promote scientific breeding management, genetic improvement and conservation of mithun, thereby supporting sustainable livestock production and the livelihood of tribal communities in North-Eastern India.

About Author
Dr. Meraj Haider Khan is graduated (BVSc & AH) from G. B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, Uttrakhand, India in the year 1999. He did his Master’s degree (MVSc) in Animal Reproduction & Gynaecology from Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh in 2001. Dr. Khan joined ARS in 2003. He served as a Scientist at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya for 10 years. After that, he joined as a Senior Scientist at ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland in 2013 and was promoted to Principal Scientist in 2016. Dr. Khan has a total of 18 years of experience in research and extension in tribal areas. He worked in the area of cryopreservation of pig and mithun semen. Developed and standardized the protocol for cryopreservation of both pig and mithun semen. Estrus behavior in mithun was characterized and standardized the protocol of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in mithun. Implemented 100% AI at Institute Mithun Farm. He Validated the technique of semen collection in mithun by artificial vagina (AV) as well as through electroejaculation. Estrus synchronization protocol in mithun was standardized. Using estrus synchronization and FTAI, more than 100 calves were produced at the institute mithun farm. This technology has also been disseminated to the field for genetic improvement of mithun and for producing superior mithun bulls. Dr. Khan has published more than 60 research articles in various national and international research journals. He handled more than 20 Research Projects funded by ICAR and DBT, Govt. of India as PI and Co-PI.
